* During one winter about 2001, we had a deep snowfall and during the night I heard noises under my cherry tree. I peeked out to find 3 does and 2 bucks digging under the snow to eat the fallen leaves. I went to my fridge and got some apples and crept back outside and put them on the porch. The deer slowly came over to investigate and then ate them all.
Over the next few years Bamba came often, first alone, then with her fawn (Dawda), and then for a few years the two came together each bringing their yearly fawns. We became familiar enough for them to eat oats from my hand. Often they would spend hot summer days under my deck where it was cool and safe.
I haven't seen them now for many months. Perhaps it is due to the construction going on or they may have moved on. I have seen a few killed on the road but don't know if they were Bamba or Dawda. It was a precious experience to interact with them and to recognize that this human loves the grace and innocence, which they seem to embody.
